VOX21 New Music Ensemble

New music ensemble VOX21 was formed by guitarist and composer Benjamin Dwyer
who is Director and Artistic Director. VOX21 boasts some of the finest performers
working in Ireland and the United Kingdom and is committed to the presentation
of new music not only in standard concert performance format but also in
collaboration with other art forms. This concept was evident in VOX21's inaugural
concert where the ensemble collaborated with the Armada Theatre Company to
give the world première performance of the new theatre version of
Haflidi Hallgrímsson Mini-Stories - an extravagant and hilarious setting
of absurd texts written by Daniil Kharms.
Since then, VOX21 has featured in many festivals including the Mostly Modern Festival (where it is ensemble-in-residence), the RTÉ Living Composers’ Festival (2003,2004), the Sligo Festival of Contemporary Music (2002) and 'Voyages - Montreal/Dublin Contemporary Music Festival 2002'.
Noted for its profile concerts of major international composers (Berio,
Scelsi, Loevendie, Andriessen etc.), VOX21 has also given the world première
of major Irish works including Raymond Deane’s Stretti, Benjamin Dwyer’s
Scenes from Crow and Omeros II, John McLaughlin’s Red and Radical Roots
and Siobhán Cleary’s Petering Out.
Forthcoming events for VOX21 include a performance at the National Concert
Hall’s Composer’s Choice Series (September 2005) for the world
première performance of a new multi-media version of Dwyer’s
Scenes from Crow for digital video and live ensemble will be given in collaboration
with visual artists/photographer David Farrell and a visit to Spain to
perform a concert of Spanish and Irish music. VOX21 will release its first
CD in early 2005.
